Recent changes
Patch 15.18
Passive and Q damage decreased.
Galio is currently one of the most dominant mid picks and has been for a few patches now. His mid-game is by far his strongest point, which has meaningfully contributed to him out competing other picks, so we're looking to bring it down to a more reasonable spot. With these changes we're looking to target both tank and full damage builds to keep his itemization between the two healthy.
Patch 15.3
Base Health decreased.
Galio should be more vulnerable early given his powerful first item spike, so we’re looking to increase counterplay by reducing his base health, especially since he performs best in high skill brackets.
Patch 14.21
Mana decreased.
Galio is hard to deal with in lane and only gets more difficult to kill once he purchases Hollow Radiance. We’re nerfing his (almost highest in the game) base mana to increase his early vulnerability by making his casts more costly. This is also intended to make Rod of Ages more of a realistic option for him but we acknowledge it's not a massive swing in that direction.
Patch 14.8
Base movement speed increased. Q cooldown decreased early.
Galio is close to a reasonable power level, but he's not fully there yet. In order to get him there we're giving him two smaller buffs to increase his power and to ensure he becomes an interesting pick for Pro play. We're increasing his base movement speed, as it's a stat he highly values, especially since he needs the target access for multiple passive procs. We're also including a small reduction to his early Q cooldown to help him get more passive refunds.
Patch 14.7
Passive damage increased. W damage reduction increased. E damage increased.
Last patch, we preemptively nerfed Galio to ensure the changes didn't land too strong. Since he landed weaker than we expected, we'll be walking back on these nerfs as they're no longer necessary. We're specifically reverting nerfs that affect him more while he's in melee range, as he needs the durability from W and the damage from passive and E to secure kills during that window. While the passive ratio buff will also strengthen his full AP builds, we're okay with that result because it skews him mid and is still helpful for his AP and HP builds.
Patch 14.6
Large adjustments to passive. Q damage decreased, cooldown decreased. W damage decreased, damage reduction adjusted. E damage decreased, damage to non champions increased.
In this patch, we’re making several adjustments to Galio with the goal of making his damage more consistent over fights and to increase his synergy with more durable AP items such as Rod of Ages and Riftmaker. The largest change we’re making is an increase to his Passive cadence throughout the game in order to require Galio to be in melee range for longer to access his full potential (this does however come at the cost of some damage). Since these changes incentivize Galio to use his passive more, we’d like to make it feel better to use by increasing his attack speed while it’s up. The second largest change here is a new health ratio on his W, which should make purchasing AP and health items feel much better. The rest of the changes are focused on ensuring tank Galio doesn’t become too strong by toning down base damage while ensuring we keep the AP ratios high. Lastly, we’re including a buff to his E waveclear, as we expect these changes to hurt his waveclear due to the base damage nerf on his passive.
Patch 13.24
Q cooldown decreased.
We're back again to follow up on our Galio changes as he's still not performing as well as we'd like him to. Our last two adjustments were intended to buff Galio's unique strengths such as his semi-global ultimate and anti-mage durability. This round, we're giving Galio players more individual power in the form of lowering his Q cooldown so he can better duel with his opponents because it's currently quite high despite being his primary poke/clear ability.
Patch 13.20
W cooldown decreased, shield restoration time decreased.
Our Galio buff from last patch wasn't as impactful as we had hoped for, and as we're looking to give him more power back, we wanted to take the changes a little bit further this time. He could use some help after the laning phase, so we're targeting his later game durability. Both the passive and active on his W retain high cooldowns throughout the game, so we decided to increase their uptime. With these changes we intend to make his unique anti-mage outputs stand out more and give him the much needed survivability a melee champion who has to get into close range in teamfights needs.
Patch 13.19
R cooldown decreased.
Galio mid is currently weak in all skill brackets and has room for some more power. Since he's already successfully fulfilling his role as an anti-mage in lane, we'll be buffing him in a way that increases his general power without altering his matchups. We're targeting his R cooldown as it's currently quite high compared to most other globals, and we want to give Galio players more opportunities to use this defining ability to impact the map.
Patch 13.6
W magic and physical damage reduction increased. E cooldown decreased.
Galio's been stuck in limbo recently, and not the fun party game kind. After patch 12.10, he doesn't deal enough damage to threaten carries by himself, but he's also not durable enough to survive for multiple spell rotations. As the Colossus of Demacia, we'd rather buff up his beefiness than make him a burst mage. So we're upping his durability and Justice Punch uptime so that he finds a little bit more utility after the laning phase.
Patch 12.13
Q damage increased.
Galio’s tornadoes have been feeling more like a light breeze recently, but we don’t want to make him a full blown AP assassin. We’re putting some more wind beneath his wings to help him poke down opponents without fully committing in hopes he’ll take off soon.
Patch 11.19
W cooldown now decreases with rank.
Galio's nerf back in 11.10 turned out to be a bit too effective on his Elite performance. We're bringing him back to life at that skill level by partially reverting those changes.
Patch 11.10
W cooldown now flat; magic damage shield decreased.
Galio's been soaring high as a mid laner and support in Elite play. His shield is where a large part of the problem lies. With an early max, Galio’s durability remains strong throughout the course of the game, so we're giving his shield appropriate downtime and scaling to match.
