Kennen's so sneaky that he snuck under players' radars for a while, but as the new season has dawned, many of you have come to understand that small shurikens can pack a big punch. We want to create windows of opportunity to succeed against him, which means preserving his power when everything's available, but creating larger gaps between those moments.
Patch 14.17

Q damage decreased.
Kennen’s 14.9 buff, which allows him to move while casting his ultimate, gave him a meaningful amount of power. Liandry’s as a first item has also increased in popularity, which has made him a bit too strong. To take away some power and tone down his damage, we’re targeting his mid-game power spike through a ratio nerf to his Q.

Base health reduced.
Moving while casting his ultimate feels great and carries a meaningful amount of power, so we're simply taking some away to account for that. He's best in higher levels of play, so we're targeting there. We're reducing his base health to give his opponents a better window to kill him once they get the jump, as he's now more elusive and his R resistances are more valuable.

E damage range indicator added. R animation added, can now cast while moving.
Kennen’s a pretty sad yordle in his current state, and that’s Amumu’s job. We’re giving Kennen a meaningful buff by way of making his kit more synergistic with itself. This fast-moving, zapping ninja no longer stands in place when powering up Slicing Maelstrom. We’re turning this anti-synergy with Lightning Rush into a positive one, allowing him to more quickly reach his targets. He’s also got a brand new animation for powering up his R to match the new cast paradigm!

E energy cost decreased. R cooldown now decreases with rank.
Kennen hasn’t been very shocking in solo queue, so we’re looking to get him into a better spot this patch. We'll be buffing his uptime instead of his damage, as he already deals a reasonable amount of it. Firstly, we'll be decreasing the energy cost of his E. Since he maxes it last, it's left at the initial cost of 100 energy for a large portion of the game. Decreasing the energy cost should allow Kennen to use it more frequently to shove waves, trade, engage, and escape. Secondly, we'll be reducing the late game cooldown of his ultimate, as Kennen heavily relies on it to be impactful during teamfights.

Q cooldown decreased, magic damage increased. W range indicator for marked targets added. E damage to minions increased.
Kennen has been lacking an exciting mage feeling for a while now. Additionally, his farming, especially under turret, makes the champion difficult for players to pick up and find success. We also wanted to give Kennen players a range indicator on W to help clarify the range at which Kennen can hit enemy champions when they're marked, which should be especially useful when fighting near minions.

Our electric yordle doesn’t have the same energy issues as other champions being adjusted this patch, but has been struggling for entirely different reasons. Shocker. With more durable targets Kennen has found it difficult to establish himself as either a lane bully or a teamfight winner. We’re putting some more power into his teamfighting identity by increasing his ability to win fights with a slight boost to his W and R damage.

Kennen hasn’t had much presence in top lane, so we’re giving him some small buffs to shock the current meta.
