Patch 16.3
Blue Kayn specifically became much weaker in the new season and we'd like to fix that with some direct buffs. There's not much fancy here except that as an assassin, he should be lethal when fighting up close and personal with his targets. As a reminder, Slayer Kayn replaces his Q when transformed.
Patch 15.24
Shadow Assassin Kayn is a bit too good at taking down his targets at the moment so we're here this patch to give them a fighting chance. We don't want Rhaast to be caught in the crossfire of these nerfs so we're taking aim at some of Blue Kayn's assassin-specific damage that often comes in the form of W poke from the fog of war.

Q and W mana costs decreased.
There are a decent number of lane Kayn (Layn) players out there and we'd like to give them a fair shot at winning their games. To do that without buffing Jayn (jungle Kayn), we're buffing mana costs to give him better access to wave clear and scrapping with his lane opponent.

Health Growth decreased.
Kayn has been an above average champion as of late, and Blue / Red Kayn are actually fairly even in terms of winrate, which is pretty cool! As a result, we're going for a generic nerf to both Kayns that won't hurt his already weak early game, and won't change the actual feel of the champion.

Q damage increased.
Shadow Assassin Kayn is definitely the weaker option right now, which just isn’t fair to this double-edgedlord. By ramping up his Q damage, we can ensure he’ll be more lethal when not playing as Rhaast, who replaces his Q anyway.
Patch 15.2
Increased Passive damage at lower levels.
Base Kayn and Red Kayn are about where we want them power-wise, but Blue Kayn isn't performing quite well enough. He doesn't need more late game burst, so we're raising up the floor of his passive a bit to give him a more powerful spike upon transforming that he can use to try to snowball the game.
Patch 14.7
Q Damage increased.
Shadow Assassin Kayn took a huge hit last patch, largely due to his synergy with Profane Hydra being heavily nerfed. He’s still got some half-decent builds with other items, so we’ll be buffing him with those in mind, since we expect him to climb as players adapt to the new normal. These changes will also slightly buff Rhaast, since he uses the basic version of Q before he transforms.

Darkin Q damage increased, Q animation now prevents use of item actives. Shadow Assassin R damage decreased.
Thanks to the last patch, fighter items now appear to be optimal on Rhaast. So mission accomplished there! That said, Kayn's two forms are still pretty far apart in power level, so we’re nerfing Shadow Assassin and buffing Darkin a bit more. We’re also specifically hitting his ability to activate items during his Q, as those items are meant to have their own cast times without being hidden inside of other spells.

Passive Darkin healing increased. R Darkin healing increased.
Red Kayn is currently feeling pretty blue. After losing access to Goredrinker and nerfs to his passive, he no longer feels like he's able to drain-tank fights and thus has to build lethality to do slightly better than if he were to build fighter items… which admittedly still isn't great. We'd like to raise the power level of Darkin Kayn while also nudging that performance toward fighter items, so we're opting to increase his self-healing which synergizes better with his fighter builds.
Patch 13.18
Passive Darkin healing adjusted. Darkin R damage decreased.
Last patch we attempted to nerf both Shadow Assassin and Darkin Kayn. While his numbers went down, we also buffed one of Darkin Kayn’s key items, which means we only achieved our goals on one of his two forms. This patch, we're making good on our goals to weaken his Darkin form. It's worth noting that a Kayn who's doing well transforms around level 8, and the old version of his Darkin passive scaled from level 1. This change makes the healing more clear and ultimately nerfs his late game.
Patch 13.17
W AD ratio decreased.
Kayn has been an absolute terror for a while now, so we’re taking a pretty big swing at lowering his power level. Right now, Shadow Assassin outperforms Darkin Kayn, especially at higher skill brackets, so we’re targeting nerfs that affect Shadow Assassin more. Ultimately, his W doesn’t have a ton of counter-play for his opponents, so reducing its power will allow us to address both lower his frustrating poke and hit our goals regarding his two forms.
Patch 13.8
E Shadow Assassin bonus move speed decreased, cooldown increased.
Shadow Assassin Kayn stands above many junglers in terms of win rate and ban rate, especially in Eastern regions. We’re trimming the uptime of his Shadow Step to make him a little easier to punish.
Patch 13.3
Passive Shadow Assassin damage increased. Q AD scaling increased.
Shadow Kayn hasn’t been the terror in the shadows he once was, suffering particularly hard in lower skill brackets. We’re giving him a bit more AD scaling to support the arguably edgier version to Kayn without giving Rhaast too much power.
Patch 12.23
Passive Shadow Assassin bonus damage increased. E heal AD ratio increased.
Shadow Assassin Kayn has fallen off over the course of the Durability Update and Preseason. While we were cautious about returning damage to burst characters after the Durability Update, it's been long enough for us to be confident that Shadow Kayn is failing on most fronts to complete his main goal… killing his enemies. We’re returning some damage to his passive and giving him a little more sustainability with some Shadow Step healing.
Patch 12.18
Darkin form Q bonus AD scaling decreased.
Rhaast has been winning the preferred Kayn form battle in most skill levels recently. Not only does he offer a surprising amount of damage, but he's also proving to be a hard-to-kill drain tank. We want to lean more into his identity as a healing tank, so we're taking his damage down so he no longer gets the best of both forms.
Patch 12.14
Health growth increased. Passive Rhaast healing based on damage dealt decreased.
Red Kayn/Rhaast has been running rampant due to the Grievous Wounds nerfs in 12.11 leaving his healing unchecked. Like Aatrox, we're shifting his power by reducing his healing and increasing his base durability.

Q damage decreased in Darkin form.
Darkin Kayn has been reaping quite a lot of benefits from the Durability Update, with all these champions walking around with more health and whatnot. Pulling some power from his Q to help him find balance post-12.10.
Patch 11.22
Darkin Q damage ratio increased. Darkin R target max health damage ratio increased.
Red Kayn took a bigger damage hit than other fighters with last patch's Goredrinker nerfs, so we're returning some damage to his kit. Additionally, his ultimate has felt a bit lackluster early game, so we're bumping up its power.
Patch 11.17
Assassin Kayn passive damage decreased.
Blue Kayn's been overshadowing games too regularly, especially with his Goredrinker build. We're reducing assassin Kayn's damage to encourage him to build more offensively in order to reap his enemies.
Patch 11.13
W VFX now revealed when in terrain.
We’re addressing a unique, frustrating case where Kayn's VFX is hidden while in terrain. Hiding VFX while out of vision is standard for many abilities, but since it's impossible for players to gain vision within terrain, it's fair to give players the opportunity to react to Kayn's spells. He’s also uniquely able to exist within terrain for an extended period of time, which is why we’re implementing this rule on him specifically.

Q Darkin damage modifier increased.
Shadow Assassin Kayn has been overshadowing his Darkin counterpart, so we’re bringing that part of Kayn… out of the dark.
