Patch 16.4
Gwen
With all the extra experience and/or gold scaling in Gwen's primary roles, she's become a total monster in the new season. While her recent jungle nerfs brought her two roles to similar power levels, they're both equally overpowered. We're not looking to significantly change her power curve, just make her fairer to play against and since we want to maintain her as a premier AP fighter, this means reducing her burst damage.
Patch 16.2
Gwen
Gwen jungle has skyrocketed in both pickrate and winrate. While we're excited to see her loving the new season and snipping from dusk til dawn, we need to make sure she's not turning all opponents (especially jungle camps) into paper.
Patch 15.21
Gwen
Back in 25.06 we sought to give Gwen more power over her laning phase while still being that scaling AP skirmisher. However, those changes have left her in a less popular state that has alienated Gwen players from the version of her that they enjoyed. So we're going back to almost the exact same champion from 25.05, with two differences: Her armor growth is a little lower, and her jungle levers are weaker. These two changes weren't reverted because she was a little too strong in top and significantly too strong in the jungle back before the changes. Enjoy your Gwensday tomorrow!
Patch 15.17
Gwen
Base Armor decreased, and Attack Speed Growth increased. R slow decreased at lower ranks.
Gwen is still very powerful in the hands of experts, especially pros, after her reshape in 15.6. While Gwen players have enjoyed her newfound agency in lane, we want to ensure she has some weak matchups and can't simply flip the script at level 6 with a guaranteed chasedown. We're delivering some compensation so as not to pull too much power out of her kit.
Patch 15.12
Gwen
Base health decreased. W cooldown increased.
Gwen’s a bit too strong in solo queue and very potent in pro play, so we’re bringing her power level down to where it deserves to be. To ensure these are pro focused, we’re aiming this nerf at her early game which is much more impactful at the highest levels of play as opposed to solo queue where she has more ability to scale consistently.
Patch 15.9
Gwen
Armor growth decreased. Passive damage to monsters decreased. Q damage decreased.
As a new surge of Gwen players have gotten better at her, the apparent rise in mastery has been offsetting some of our recent nerfs. As she’s still one of the strongest champions in the game, and the single strongest one in jungle, we’re delivering some more nerfs to keep up with how well all of you are playing her.
Patch 15.8
Gwen
E damage decreased.
Gwen's new power curve has added a lot of agency to her early game, but she's still a little too high-power for her current shape and slightly too powerful earlygame.
Patch 15.7
Gwen
Q final damage decreased. W scaling adjusted.
Gwen is too strong after her 15.6 changes, and more early game skewed than intended. To ensure she's still somewhat of a scaling champion as intended, we're going back on some of the previous early game buffs and re-adding some of her old scaling.
Patch 15.6
Gwen
All abilities adjusted.
Gwen was originally intended to be a lightly scaling AP fighter, and her kit's design and strengths reflect that. However, over time she shifted towards late game scaling and she's been closer in power curve shape to a hyperscaler like Kayle as opposed to a lightly scaling fighter like Fiora. We believe that the best version of Gwen is one where her Q stacking gameplay and E dash are actually powerful and fun tools to work with in the laning phase, and potentially even in the jungle. But today she tends to play to scale and wins teamfights with only Needlework casts. We still want players to be able to take over games as Gwen, but by using her entire kit rather than farming up a bunch of gold and throwing ultimate needles.
Patch 14.21
Gwen
Passive damage decreased.
Gwen has proven to be exceptionally strong as of late and is due for a meaningful nerf. Her power curve is steeper than we’d like overall, so we don’t want to weaken her early laning phase, we do want to make sure she’s not quite so dominant late. We’d also like to nudge her builds a bit more toward skirmisher (Riftmaker, Cosmic Drive) and less toward burst mage (Shadowflame, Deathcap), which is why we’re targeting AP ratios.
Patch 13.18
Gwen
Health growth increased. Passive damage to monsters increased.
Gwen jungle (Gwungle) is in a pretty sad spot right now. Gwen top also has some room for extra power, but Gwen jungle needs a bunch. So this patch we're taking a heavy swing into bringing Gwen jungle back as a viable magic damage carry option. Thousand Cuts is not only applied per basic attack but also on each hit of her Q, so this damage cap increase represents a substantial increase in her damage to monsters. The passive buff walks back the jungle nerf from 12.13, which should hit the magnitude we want for jungle power. Our goals are to retain top Gwen as the... top Gwen, but to have jungle be a viable alternate role.
Patch 13.15
Gwen
Base health regeneration increased. W bonus armor and MR increased.
Gwen needs some help at the moment, and we’re here to throw her a metaphorical lifeline (of yarn).. Her damage is already in a good spot so we want to focus on helping her early game, particularly into her more difficult matchups, by increasing her durability. These changes should help Gwen trade better into tough opponents, especially when she’s using her Hallowed Mist well.
Patch 12.20
Gwen
Q base damage increased.
Gwen hasn't been scary in quite a while as she currently needs to get into late game to start gaining an edge over her opponents. We're sharpening her mid-game power a tad to help her better compete with other, similar fighters.
Patch 12.15
Gwen
Q true damage conversion decreased.
Gwen’s changes in 12.13 achieved our goals of making it easier for players to lane with her and execute her combos, but they were a bit too effective at the highest levels of play. We intend to keep her identity as a powerful scaler, but we’re trimming just a bit of damage from her late game.
Patch 12.13
Gwen
Health regen growth increased. Q snip damage increased, center snip true damage decreased, now deals reduced damage against minions, but bonus damage against low health minions. W bonus armor and MR increased, duration decreased. E bonus on-hit magic damage increased, bonus attack range increased, cooldown increased, cooldown refunded on first basic attack increased. R damage per needle increased, recast conditions adjusted.
Gwen has been one of the premiere top laners since MSI, and the Durability Update only increased her strengths. Even after her nerfs in 12.11, she’s still a cut above the competition, especially when it comes to Pro Play. We’re snipping some power out of her Pro-skewed abilities like her E and W to patchwork it into some more accessible parts of her kit. These should net out in a nerf to Pro Gwen and a buff to her in Average and Skilled levels of play.
Patch 12.11
Gwen
W cooldown increased, bonus armor/MR decreased early and now scales with ability rank. E cooldown refund from first basic attack decreased.
Gwen's been the most dominant top laner in Pro thanks to her high resilience, mobility, and damage. In particular, with longer fight durations, she's more often able to cast Hallowed Mist twice, so we're increasing the cooldown of her incredibly powerful teamfight tool. We're also reverting the E change from 12.7 which was giving her dash more uptime in fights than intended.
Patch 12.7
Gwen
E cooldown refund increased. R cooldown decreased early.
Gwen's been hanging by a thread after her most recent nerfs, so we're stitching her up with some cooldown buffs that should help her across all skill levels. Needle-ss to say, we don't think these changes will fully address her issues, but we're being extra careful considering her pattern of dominating Pro.
Patch 12.5
Gwen
Passive damage against monsters decreased. E bonus attack range decreased.
Gwen has been shredding up top and jungle in Pro play for some time now. So we’re snipping off some of her power so her weaknesses are more apparent and her strength as a flex pick is reduced.
Patch 11.19
Gwen
Base health regen increased.
Gwen's E nerf in 11.15 was effective in snipping her overwhelming early lane power, especially in Pro. Now, similar to Akali's situation, there's room to weave in some more durability for Gwen players at all levels.
Patch 11.15
Gwen
E bonus attack speed decreased early.
Equipped with raw stat power and a big ol’ pair of scissors, it’s a little too easy for Gwen to snip back at even the toughest of opponents. We’re looking to sharpen her intended weakness by tapping down the speed of her slashes from level 1.
Patch 11.8
Gwen
The Hallowed Seamstress
Gwen snips, skips, and slashes into 11.8 on April 15th.
